We do not need more of the things that are seen, we need more of the things that are unseen. However if you think about it, the cookie you sneaked out of the kitchen is unseen, injustice is unseen, and the uncertain future of AI is unseen. ‘Unseen’, meaning not seen or perceived, has a unique understanding for everyone. What image flashes in your mind at the mention of this word? Personally, I envisioned a shadowy corner, overlooked in daylight. Then there’s this person, standing there, neglected. Yet, there’s a ray of sunshine piercing through, landing near the corner, symbolizing hope and future. These form what I perceive as the word ‘unseen’.
Naturally, certain aspects of life remain ‘unseen’ simply due to our limited omniscience. However, there are instances where we choose to ‘unseen’ what’s in plain sight. This act may be from self protection, shielding us from the constant reminder of the ugliness of our world. However, did we close our eyes willingly, or were they shut by someone else? There are so many things in the world. that remain buried under societal norms, hidden for various reasons. But why would they do so? I would say it’s because having things “unseen” benefits them in some shape or form. Inequality and injustice happen every second around the world, and those who have the opportunity and ability to correct and expose them chose not to. They might be an accomplice of this unfairness, bribed, or believe that certain actions hold greater significance.
At times, one may experience the sensation of being ‘unseen’. It might be the empty text messages through your vacation, or the feeling of social isolation at a party. Yet, unseen has another perception–hope. The uncertainty tied to the future opens doors to possibilities and change, because we don’t know, therefore possibilities exist.
Navigating the complexities of the unseen, where it is shaped by circumstances and deliberate choices. We need to acknowledge that some aspects of our society remain concealed. The idea of the unseen has rooted in our society. Whether as solitude in a crowd, silence of information, or the potential of hope. We should all embrace this uncertainty, seek to understand it and then endeavor to overcome it.
