your second language | Kayla Streem (11)

Writer's picture: shsimagesshsimages

shoes pointing toward me

pupils wide and dilated

a smile stamped on your face —

it was obvious.

walking in step with me

choosing my tempo

a slight brush of our hands —

it was obvious.

moving across the room

i’ll see that you came too

and your shoulder met mine —

it was obvious.

you spoke a second language

and you didn’t even know it

and because i was fluent —

it was obvious.

so when you asked me how i knew

when you said

“i love you”

it was obvious, really:

posture, eyes, brows,

hands, feet, lips —

all the tiny twitches, angles, and facings

did all the talking for you.

in a way,

you were telling me the whole time.

in fact,

your second language had been speaking

for hours.
