Free Me | Jolie Goulakos (11)

Free me

Free a woman of her need to be saccharine

Sticky, tacky, sweet, made by god to be seen

Free her

She’s dipped her hands in honey

And tied her hair up perfectly

Mascara tears too runny

It was to avoid anyone hurting me

Watch them

Men can be bitter

So strong you feel it in your eyes

She's not a quitter

She grins and bears it, and lies.

Because she fears

The barbed wire taste

And the sound in her ears

The look on his face

She sweetens her response with syrup

Tells him that’s not how she meant it

The pot of black coffee she can't stand to stir up

Because he took her answer and bent it.

Men are like char

One wrong move

And you’ve gone too far

One wrong word

And you’re a baby bird

He's a snake with an appetite

For the sweetest thing,

He could ever bite
