Know Thyself | Suder Natesan

Once was a girl

that grew up in a family

Each present-day a birthday

Wholesome with love

She was a studious child

She was told to only to study

She was told to only play House

She was told to never look outside the home for love

And by age 22, she had a professional degree

Little did she and the world know

that it was just for Show-And-Tell

Families would ask for her hand in marriage

Mother-in-laws would ask her how her day was,

but would never listen

Suitors would ask about her hobbies,

but would never listen

Father-in-laws would sip the tea she brought,

but would never thank her

Nonetheless, she would smile kindly

with lustorfull coffee-brown eyes and a mouth that had never let coffee pass through them

All because she was told to never drink coffee as a child

You see, this family was quite liberal compared to others

Even though the mother had a elementary education and the father a university education

Things were different 3 scores ago

Destiny was already written before the child was born

No social movement except for the rich

Fortunately the father came from a rich background

The life he had before and after education always had one similarity:

to help others to the best of his ability

This motto was followed through even when the world was unfair to him and his family

Because he believed that as long as he was good, good would come to him

This naive, but promising spark of humanity helped hundreds of people around him

He believed his hard work would pay off in retirement

However darkness followed him

but it was put at bay by all the goodness he had done

for the countless of lives he had saved

Alas, the most important life could not be saved for he had been the one

to help destruct it unknowingly

At age 24, she left home holding a man’s hand

His hand was rough, but warm

So she kept holding it for another 21 years

At age 45, she has a fight with her oldest daughter in the master bedroom

It was her mother’s birthday

You see, this daughter was trying to celebrate

Her mother’s birthday

The birthday of a mother a world away

This mother was her best friend

The friend who told her to only play House

But this was also the friend who let her experience the world alone

so that she would come back stronger

Little did she know that her daughter was already strong enough to face the world,

but never strong enough to face herself

She curses her daughter to never achieve the things she wants

Devastated by the situation

She crashes back into bed, head beneath the covers

Wishing she could leave this life

Little did she know

her daughter wanted the same thing

Both born into a world

One young with a disorientated mind wishing to change the world

The other with a subdued mind wishing to live life

However both did not know themselves

and so could not achieve their wishes

So I tell them,

Know Thyself

for the world

will not help

you be yourself
