Winter | Hannah Levenson (11)

Updated: Apr 27, 2022

I leave the mirror to hang on the wall.

Winter is both uniquely beautiful and harsh,

Limited regions are capable of having snow,

But those who do remain bitterly cold for six months,

The snowflakes fall slowly, like rain in slow motion,

But when they hit your face, your eyes, you become blinded,

So you put on your coat and your hat, staying warm to watch the snow fall,

But if you forget your gloves, your fingers freeze, and once you warm them up, it’s a burning sensation,

Taking your sled out of the garage, you sled down the slopes of your yard,

Until your father calls you over and tells you to shovel the driveway,

Your never lonely even as animals have gone into hibernation, snowmen and snow animals are crafted and erected by children with creative minds,

But their evil older brother strikes their new friends with a shovel,

Your mother calls you inside for a cup of hot chocolate, which of course, has marshmallows and whipped cream,

But if you drink it to fast, you will burn your tongue, and if you wait to long, it will go cold,

You curl up by the fire with your blankets, feeling cozy and protected from the cold,

But your cats keep trying to steal your blankets, grabbing them with their teeth,

Winter may seem everlasting, and the days may seem long,

But crestfallen, the winter snow melts, and the ground turns soggy and muddy in time for spring.
